An assassin . . . thatās what I am.
Iām Wade Chandler by day and a killer at night. I get the job done no matter the cost. Not only do I hunt people for the FBI, but Iām also the owner of Chandler Enterprises, one of the top companies in the southeast.
When Brina Carmichael ā daughter of the former president ā wants my business advice, itās hard to resist her long legs and seductive smile. One thing leads to another and now Iām in too deep.
I canāt let her know what I am, but Iāve never wanted a woman the way I want her.
However, harboring secrets comes at a price and I have a feeling sheās keeping some of her own. Especially, when my next mission leads me straight to her. Turns out sheās not who I thought she was.

Standing at the receptionistās desk, I waited to hear the verdict. Would Wade see me or not? When I heard his answer, I breathed a sigh of relief. I didnāt want my stupidity to ruin my shopās chances at success.
The receptionist smiled up at me. āYou can go back now, Ms. Carmichael. His office is the last one on the right.ā
āThank you,ā I replied with a smile of my own.
Pulse pounding in my ears, I walked down the hall to Wadeās office. I had a folder of my designs tucked under my arm. Hopefully, itād be enough to persuade him. Taking a deep breath, I knocked on his door.
āCome in,ā he called out, his voice making me shiver.
I hated how this man made me feel like that. Itād been over a week and I could still feel the way he touched every square inch of my body. I wasnāt a needy woman, but he made me want more. This is business, nothing more.
Head held high, I opened the door. Wade was at his desk, leaning back in his chair, all cool and confident, dressed in his expensive suit with his brown hair perfectly coifed. Definitely not a bundle of nerves, like I was. āMr. Chandler, itās good to see you again.ā
His brows lifted. āLikewise. Although Iād probably believe it more if you hadnāt run out on me the last time.ā
And there it was.
Biting my lip, I shut the door. I couldnāt tell if he was angry, or didnāt care. āThought Iād save you the trouble,ā I confessed. āWe both had a little too much to drink that night. And letās face it, it was either going to be me or you. And I prefer not to be the one left behind.ā
āNeither do I,ā he said in all seriousness. āSo, what brings you here?ā
~5 out of 5 stars!~
First of all, when the author says that this is the second book in a series, but can be read as a standalone, she is absolutely correct ā in fact, I didnāt even have a clue until AFTER I read it that there was a book before it! I had zero feeling that I had missed anything. I feel itās important to say that, because some authors say it can be read as a standalone, but even though the story is new, you still sometimes feel like you missed something here and there. Absolutely not the case here. It felt like a completely new book.
As for the romance in the book? If youāre not normally a romance person, you will still love this book. The story completely stands on its own, and even if you took the romance out of it, it would be an equally awesome book. The romance also isnāt overwhelming. Itās very well written, and isnāt one of those that makes you super uncomfortable, and goes on forever. If you ARE a romance fan, you definitely will not be disappointed either! Itās hot, itās steamy, itās loving, and again, not overwhelming. It felt real and natural, and it really added to the story, especially about why itās believable that they would change their āfling onlyā views once they were together.
What I really liked about this story was this was no ādamsel in distress, tough guy comes and saves the day, and they fall in loveā story. They were equals in a surprising amount of ways. Even in the small things that kind of made you laugh. They also caught each other off guard in the similarities, which is what kept drawing them to each other.
There were zero boring moments in this book, with something constantly happening. Even when you thought it was going to be a lull in the story, you found yourself holding your breath because you knew something had to happen ā and youād usually be right.
Because of the time period this story covers, there are 2 Presidents. The only very small issue I had with this story was that it was a little too easy for those wanting to cause harm to get close to the Presidents and their family. In real life, I think they would all have much more coverage, and the places they go to would be more surrounded by secret service or āclearedā by them. I see why the author wrote it that way, which is a big part of the story (a spoiler I wonāt give away), but even with this, they would have more coverage. However, for me, it didnāt distract from the story much at all, so it wasnāt enough to rate it lower, but if youāre picky about particulars, thatās the only thing that may bother you.
Now that I know thereās a book 1, Iām going to rush out and buy it while I wait for book 3. This was a really great read that felt like it went by super fast. I definitely recommend it.

She loves to write, but she also loves to play tennis, go on mountain hikes and white water rafting, and has a passion for singing. Her two youngest fans expect a concert each and every night before bedtime, usually Christmas carols.
Dover has written countless novels, including her Forever Fae series, the Second Chances series, the Gloves Off series, the Armed & Dangerous series, the Royal Shifters series, and her standalone novel Love, Lies, and Deception. Her favorite genre to read and write is romantic suspense, but if she got to choose a setting in which to live, it would be with her faeries in the Land of the Fae.
